What Are the Benefits of Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are the most effective way to restore the natural appearance and function of your teeth. We primarily use porcelain dental crowns in our Boise dental office, so they will match your other teeth perfectly. Crowns are also frequently used to restore a damaged tooth after a root canal. They help strengthen your tooth and protect it from further damage, allowing you to chew, eat, and speak normally once again. And because crowns can last up to 15+ years with proper care, you’ll be able to enjoy your smile, carefree.

What Can I Expect from the Dental Crown Process?

Getting a crown at Boise Dental Arts usually requires 2 appointments during the span of about 2-3 weeks. After Dr. Brown confirms that a dental crown is right for you, you’ll schedule your first appointment. At this appointment, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed. Then, Dr. Brown will remove all of the damaged enamel and material from your tooth, and shape it into a strong, stable platform, to which the crown can be attached. Then, impressions will be taken of your smile, and sent to an outside dental laboratory, where your crown will be made.

It usually takes 2-3 weeks for your crown to be built and sent to our office, so you’ll be given a temporary crown, and you’ll be sent home. Then, when your crown arrives, you’ll come in for your follow-up appointment. Dr. Brown will check the crown to make sure it fits and looks right, and then he will bond it into place permanently, completing the procedure.

How Can I Care for my Dental Crown?

To care for a dental crown, you should simply treat it like a normal tooth. Brush and floss properly, see Dr. Brown for regular cleanings and exams, avoid using your teeth as “tools” to open bags, and stay away from chewing non-food objects like fingernails and pens. If you grind your teeth, you may also need a night guard, as the constant pressure from teeth grinding could damage your crown.
